Hector Vazquez

Hector Vazquez was born on May 21, 1959 to Doris Ortiz and Hector Vazquez. He is the second oldest of 4 children in the family. His parents migrated from Puerto Rico and The Dominican Republic to New York City in the early 1950s. Hector attended Samuel Gombers High School and Thomas Edison High School where he graduated from in June of 1977. While in High School he studied Electrical Theory and Installations.

Hector enlisted in the United States Navy in June 1977. He completed basic training, Basic Electricity and Electronics school and Advanced Electrical training at Great Lakes, Illinois. In 1978 Hector enrolled in the Pre-Engineering course at York College. While going to school and working in the field, he completed his six-year enlistment in the Naval Reserves.

Hector Vasquez was initiated into the Local Union #3, Apprenticeship Program in 1979. He participated in the first graduating class of Empire State College where he received his Associates degree in Labor Studies. And in 1983 he entered in to his MIJ time. In 1985 he received his “A” journeyman card. Hector has served in different positions as a journeyman in the industry. He has been a sub- foreman, forman and has been a shop steward since 1993. He also worked at The Jacob Javits Convention Center, MSG and Shea Stadium as a Video and Audio operator.

In 1989 hurricane Hugo devastated Puerto Rico and resulted in 12 deaths. The S.I.E.S. gathered a group of volunteers to represent Local Union #3 to the Central Labor Council in the relief program of the American Red Cross. Upon hearing of this, Hector volunteered and went to Puerto Rico where he met with Eddie Vega, an S.I.E.S. member working as Staff for the American Red Cross in Puerto Rico. He also met with a group of other S.I.E.S. members who where there volunteering in the relief effort. Returning to New York, Hector wanted to get involved with the Club and Community.

Hector has been an active member of the S.I.E.S. since 1989 and has played an important role in the clubs success. Hector has served as a Board of Director, Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary and is currently an Advisor to the Society. He has organized and chaired many of our activities which include the Jose Lopez 5k walk/run, “Cosmos Kids” Day at Bayberry, Co-Chairman and Chairman of the annual family picnics at Bayberry, co-chairman of past Dances and has lead many of the Political and Community assignments which were giving to us by Local Union #3. Hector is also a volunteer with Local #3s Video Crew.

Hector Vasquez resides in Queens. He has four children; Cynthia, Katheryn, Gabriel, Daniel and four grandchildren; Damian, Devon, Emily and Alivia. Hector is an avid “Muscle Car” enthusiast and enjoys auto racing.
